I got to Balloch (on the shore of Loch Lomond) at night, in the rain, after a long day of hitching and riding trains. So I was both frustrated from the day and completely relieved to finally arrive (I also had had some concerns that I might not be able to find the place). To the right is the hostel I stayed in - like Castle Carbisdale, it was converted from a castle (actually a fort) into a hostel. The next day I took a walk into town. Below is a view of the loch (in the distance, behind the field) I saw while on my walk. Yes, I realize this is just a duck, but there's actually a funny story behind it. I was sitting there minding my own business eating a snack, when this duck walked up out of the water and started quacking at me. He clearly wanted some of my food (after all, all the other people were feeding all the other ducks and swans there). I refused because I don't think feeding wildlife is a good thing - they learn to rely on us too much. But he continued to quack away for a couple more minutes until a dog came and chased him back into the water. After the dog left though, he got right back out and resumed his quacking. After a couple more minutes, he realized the futility, turned around, shit on the ground in front of me, and walked off. Guess he showed me. |
This is a part of the loch that is used as a harbor (the pile of boats, almost all motor, are to the right, out of sight). I sat and had a snack on the far side (that's where I met the duck down below - gosh I wonder where he got the idea he could get food from me). |
