CORK, IRELAND

Cork was the first and last place I went to in Ireland. This is largely because I actually knew some people there from Apple (there's an Apple plant in Cork). They picked me up from the airport, bought me a drink, and then took me out to a pub that first night - what a great reception into Ireland! Actually very typical for the Irish - to go out drinking in pubs every night :) They also took me on a (thoroughly exciting - no really it was quite interesting) tour of the Apple plant. And then, even better, after I had made my rounds of Ireland, the following weekend they took me out to a club to get smashed and very graciously put me up in their apartment for the weekend. To the right is a view of the city from their apartment.

This is me with Aisling (middle) and Margaret, two of the three who put up with me for the weekend. Margaret's boyfriend Tom is actually missing from the picture cuz he was too camera-shy. I'm sure he now really regrets not having his face posted for all the world to see :)

These are two views of Cork, the downtown area (below), and the more suburban area. While the downtown area of Cork definitely looks "urban" (though it's actually too far away to see in the picture), it's still not the same as a typical city in the US. No skyscrapers or even any really tall buildings - most are no more than 3 stories. From what I saw, all the cities in Ireland and Scotland are like this.

This is inside the Cork airport. I was trying to finish off a role of film, and this statue of a guy fishing in a fountain in the airport looked cool for some reason. Here's what Margaret has to say about the statue:
"The pict of the guy at the Airport in Cork fishing is actually a bronze statue of a guy called Jack Charlton. As you know we are very much into sport here in Ireland - as is evident by the crowds in every pub when a match is on - ;-). Jack Charlton was the Manager of the Ireland Soccer team which got on really well in the second last World Cup and the European Cup. Jack is also an avid fisherman so thats where the statue comes from."
Thanks for the input Margaret!
